Do Gay People play Polo??

So today, we got an add request from a rather queer looking individual, I am afraid to say so myself. No not gay, just queer looking. I actually secretly hoped he was gay, just to answer my little nagging question.
Do gay people play polo?? Every other Minority is represented in polo, but where are the rainbow casting, glitter sprinkling, "Ohhh my God!-ing" Gays??? Absent from the sport? or is Polo one of those sports were the gay people who play it are afraid to come out??

If you know even ONE gay, just One, that plays the sport. Would love to know!!

Polo Tics,
Please post a blog about Polo 4 Peace, and thanks for the support,
Claudia

Sunday September 21st was declared by unanimous vote at the United Nations in 2001 as PEACE DAY. I only recently became aware of this fact after receiving the following 2 minute video link from J:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FmEIP46B-E

When I heard Jeremy ask " how are you going to be involved on Peace Day ? He suggests, among other ideas "... or organize a soccer match ..." I immediately thought lets PLAY POLO 4 PEACE.

What a wonderful way to unite the world's outstanding polo community for a noble cause ; an action that will help spread the word about the importance of the date; a way to show our appreciation and respect for PEACE; and as a bonus a vehicle to promote the sport of polo in a positive way.

If we all add a grain of salt..... so across various Internet sites I began to promote POLO 4 PEACE.

The idea was to: Please play Polo 4 Peace on Sunday September 21st, at your own polo club. The goal was to promote Peace and the date. We all remember September 11th, lets help the world learn and remember September 21st as official World Wide PEACE Day, until it becomes a tradition like February 14th.

I set out two months ago in an attempt to reach all the polo playing nations by Internet sites. looking for at least one volunteer, or Ambassador , in each nation to participate, in their own way , by Playing Polo 4 PEACE on September 21st.

Individuals in over 30 countries have contacted me , from Pakistan to England and Argentina to Malaysia polo players will be playing Polo 4 PEACE on September 21st.

FANTASTIC NEWS: Yesterday, on September 11th I was informed, by another woman polo player, that she was happy to confirm that "The Berliner Polo Club v. 1906 together with Polo Partner Berlin welcomes a delegation of Iraqi army players to a friendship chukka in Berlin - for Peace Day on September 20th and 21st. The target is, to build up a horse therapy center in Baghdad for amputated soldiers and civilians. "

BTW, another bonus fact is that both the FIP and IOC support Peace-Sport an International Organization (www.peace-sport.org) with the objective of "inciting the international sporting community to act beyond its traditional operation field, and actively contribute to peace."

Tiger87, Dale, Backhander, Mike, Walter, Steve, brokenmallet, Alex etc.

What will you do on September 21st for PEACE Day ?

Quoted an the annual forum:
"C'est un honneur pour moi de contribuer modestemnet a la cause de la paix et du sport"
He Zhenliang, Membre du CIO

My feelings today exactly.

Saludos from Argentina,

Claudia

BTW - YES, Gay People Play Polo.

Gay Polo League arrives in Southern California
By Chip McKenney

One of the oldest sports in the world is a new favorite for some gay men and lesbians, at least in Los Angeles. Polo has all the ingredients to become a great sport for gay people to participate in. It has a vast history, innate beauty, requires teamwork, athleticism and is played throughout the world. Traditionally, it is one of the most macho sports – yet one in which women compete equally with men.

I casually played polo for a couple of years. During that time I explored other gay sports – skiing, bowling, softball and tennis – but felt I wanted a more unique gay-sports experience, one that fosters camaraderie, has a strong social component, incorporates travel, is suitable for all ages and skill levels to participate in and, most importantly, attractive to others, like myself, who were looking for ‘something different and special.’ So I decided to create the Gay Polo League.

Initially I contacted John Westley, the resident polo coach at the Santa Barbara Polo and Tennis Club in Santa Barbara to discuss forming a Gay Polo League; he was 100% behind the idea. One Sunday per month I organize two groups, advanced and less advanced, to play at the Santa Barbara Polo School. Each game lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. During the game, Westley instructs us on the game of polo, mallet skills, game strategy and horsemanship. The school provides helmets, mallets, tack, polo ponies and instruction for a total cost of $80 per session. Afterwards, our group tailgates the professional polo games - a great way to spend an afternoon.

Recently, the Gay Polo League has begun playing each Wednesday night at the California Polo Club in Los Angeles. Domingo, the resident coach, has embraced my mission and extended a warm welcome to the club. Most Wednesdays, we have eight to 10 members playing.

The next step is to organize polo games at the Eldorado and Empire Polo Clubs in Palm Springs during the winter.

Currently, the GPL has a membership of approximately 38 men and one woman. The age range of our membership is 26 to 54 years old. While several members have ridden a fair portion of their lives, most have limited or no previous riding or polo playing experience at all. However, many of our developing players have rapidly progressed to a level where they can be competitive with others with more riding experience.

On balance, all members are attracted to polo because of its uniqueness. It is unlike any other sport you can play. In addition to polo games, the GPL leaders are incorporating cocktail parties, dinners, and other events to attend as a group. It is our intent to share the fun and passion for polo with others. It is a wonderful way to incorporate an unusual and challenging dimension to our lives
